Open RAN Challenges and Community Support

Mobile operators are adopting Open RAN solutions to lower the cost of resources and operations required for Radio Access Networks. For similar coverage, Open RAN drastically reduces investment by leveraging commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment for the baseband unit (BBU) and radio unit (RU) hardware and disaggregating the software and hardware. But transition to the open and multivendor RAN ecosystem brings forth a few challenges for adopters. Different vendors and operators came together to form communities to address those challenges and facilitate a common knowledge pool to innovate the Open RAN technology.

This eBrief focuses on the challenges in adopting Open RAN and highlights the role the different technology communities play in eliminating these challenges.
